Below are the projects we hope to undertake this year.  Scroll down for a complete list and projected dates.  There will be information sent home to keep parents updated, prior to the projects.  Most of the are done in school, with support from home.


End of the Year Project! May 2009
(This will be done in school)
Continent will be North America

Make an informational Alpha Book on North America. 
Students will be in groups of 4 with each student being responsible for finding information on
six alphabet letters from the topic of North America.
Class time will be given for group research.

Each letter only needs to have one picture from the Internet.

Facts must be fifth grade appropriate and with proper sentence structure and topic. 

Example alpha template below has 2 parts, with 2 facts each.

(A) Alabama
is the 22nd state, and located in the southern region of the United States. 
It's capital is Montgomery with a population of 4,447,100.

(B) Alabama River flows west toward Selma. 
Its width varies from 200 to 300 yards, and its depth from three to seven feet.


Oil vs. No Oil Project 2009
This will be completed in class. 
Students must bring in old magazines or pre-cut pictures at home that represent one of two categories:
*products made through the use of oil
*products made without the use of oil

Students will be paired and provided with poster board.
They will use their pictures to create collages for each category.


December Project - 2008
Build a Poster Board 
Topic: Nine European cities & countries

This board will be put together in class during the week of December 1.  
Presentations are December 4.


Students will discuss and select their jobs for this project.
Students will bring picture examples, titles (pre-typed if possible), and city/country information and facts on their selected country.  
Students brought home information in a letter.  All pictures and information will be combined with those in the group. 
They must cite the picture resource origin and include that on the back of the poster board.   
If you would like to donate a poster-size (20 x 30) foam board, it would be greatly appreciated.   Students are asked to bring construction paper, glue, and scissors.


The U.S. Postcard Project Fall 2008
Last postmark day is October 23- thanks to all who participated!  Postcard Letter Sample

Directions:
Over the next several weeks, we will be focusing on our country's 50 states. 
Our Postcard Project will help us learn about the states and territories of the U.S. 
Students should print the postcard sample linked above, and send it to friends and relatives that live outside Virginia.  

At the end of the year, the postcards will be returned to the students and there will be recognition for different categories
such as the farthest away, the most cards received, etc. 
To receive extra credit, all postcards must be postmarked by October 24.
